Short Hair Styles

Growing out a short hair style can be one of the most frustrating and confidence zapping processes a girl can go through, I once heard that 70% of a girl’s confidence comes from her hair. Thus growing out a short hair cut over a period of a year can mean 365 bad hair days. As a hair guru this is one of the most common problems I face and I have to admit I have gone through this process myself, having gone from having a funky short hair cut that everyone loved, to looking like a prison escapee as the months of growing out progressed.

So what follows is my best advice for short hair styles especially when you are growing out your hair;

1. Cut A Little As Often As You Can

I know the point of growing your hair is not to cut it, but believe me it’s wise to take a little longer growing that hair out and allow your hairdresser help you by regularly tidying it up and keeping it in a reasonable style as you grow your hair out. Find a hairdresser that you trust and who knows your main aim is to grow your hair out. Remember short hair cuts come in various lengths with a help of a professional you can look like a star at every stage.

2. Keep It Layered

My best tip for looking like you have hair style rather than like your in transition is to not to grow your hair into one length from short to long. Not only will it be more frustrating for you, but you will end up looking like you are wearing a wig that has been run over, as the layers start to stick out and grow in different directions. So until your hair gets to about mid neck keep it layered and then you can start the process of growing it into one length.

3. Go For Shine

Short hair can often look a little dull especially if you have black hair, and because you are not cutting it as often it can get frizzy adding to your growing out woes. Aim to always keep your hair looking shiny and healthy, invest in the best shampoo and conditioner you can afford, and take my advice invest in a good hair shining serum.

4. Accessorize

One of the best ways to disguise a bad hair day, and you will have many when you are growing out your hair is to accessorize. Thankfully headbands are all the rage at the moment. Resist the temptation to just push your hair back with a headband, blow dry the front of your hair into a fringe and put a wide headband behind your fringe to control the rest of your hair. A skinny headband worn with a fringe can also be a great look for work.

Split bobby pins like the one in the Scunci’s range are fantastic as they are long enough to hold a lot of hair yet come in a funky finish, do a side part and hold the hair with one split bobby pin, this also works well for the pompadour look, pull back the middle of your hair and a form a bit of quiff and hold firm with a no slip grip clip. Make sure you smooth the side of your hair with a shine serum for classic yet stylish look.

5. Skip The Mini Pony Tails

I realize that sometimes being able to pull a your growing hair back and put it into a tiny pony tail can be tempting, but that look is for sweaty tennis players, not fashionista’s who can handle every style situation. If you want to sweep all your hair back into a clean style do it with bobby pins, however invest in the best quality bobby pins that will stay in your hair all day as it will be a nightmare having to readjust your hair style.

Growing out a short hair cut can actually be exciting as you virtually get to have a different style every week, however it’s a commitment so make it firmly and stay away from hairdressers when you are having a bad day. Follow my tips and enlist the help of a good hairdresser, hair products and accessories and most importantly have fun.

Nostalgic Flashback Of The 1950s

Since I grew up in the 1950's it is fun for me to reflect on some of the nifty things during that era.

Drive In Theatres Known then as the "passion pit", Drive In Theatres bring back many happy memories! My birthday being in July was the prime season for Drive In movies. I would invite all my friends over to celebrate my birthday complete with my mother's homemade barbeque sandwiches which was my favorite. She would make it from sliced rump roast and then lay the meat in an electric skillet smothered in barbeque sauce. Just before dark we would all pile into a car and head for the drive In. I still remember the intermission jingle "Let's all go to the lobby" with the hot dog, soda drink and popcorn dancing across the screen. The Drive In was the favorite place to go on a date and the after the show we would go to the Steak n Shake for a hamburger and fries. At that time you stayed in your car and your food was brought to you. A tray holder was placed on the drivers side window to hold the food. It was just brought to my attention from my teenage grandchildren that "going steady" is no longer used. I asked them what do you call it now? They replied just "going out". Makes no sense to me, but that is how times change. Back in the 50's and 60's when you were "going steady", the girl would be given her boyfriends ring to wear. Because they were always too big to fit, we would wrap the back with white bandage tape and then cover that with fuzzy angora yarn in different colors.. way too cool! The only place you could buy the angora in my town was a department store downtown and I can still remember that they did not have cash registers at the counters, but instead the clerk would send your money through a vacuum tube that led upstairs to the cashiers office. It was much like the drive in banking tube that is used today.

Rock n Roll The summer of 1955 with Bill Haley's song "Rock Around the Clock" changed the music we listened to forever. I was hooked. Then came Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, and the rest is history. Every Saturday I would walk downtown to Lindstrom's Record store and listen to the latest hits and always come home with at least one new 45. In my bedroom next to my bed was my radio that I would listen to every night just to hear the newest songs. Radio at that time was AM only and at night with less interference in the airwaves I could pick up a station from Little Rock which was about 600 miles from where I lived. The commercial that I will never forget was for White Rose Petroleum Jelly. I was so excited the night I heard the song "Sea Cruise" that I ran down to Lindstrom's to buy it only to find out that it wasn't available yet. My parents did not like Rock n Roll and would say it sounds like noise. They did however "put up" with it and allowed me to play my record player as loud as it would go which was not very loud when compared to today's stereos. Now we have a stereo in the living room, a portable stereo in the garage complete with subwoofer, subwoofers on our computers and a subwoofer in the car. My love for music has stayed with me and the music and the equipment to play it with just keeps getting better.

Clothes Cuffed bobbie socks worn with suede "buckskin" shoes or saddle shoes that came in all color combinations and styles from light weight to the original heavier oxford in black and white. The sleeves were always cuffed and rolled on the girls short sleeve shirts, and finished off with a scarf around the neck. Wool skirts with the length at the middle of the calf with a slit in the back. The favorite hair styles were pony tails, and shoulder length hair that was rolled at the ends with bangs and usually a side part. Barrettes were often used as decoration and to hold the hair away from the face. The boys typical clothes were blue jeans with cuffed legs, a t-shirt with rolled sleeves, or a shirt with the back of the collar turned up. They wore various short hair styles ranging from the butch to slightly longer Elvis style that was combed back and held in place with VO5 Hair Dressing into a duck tail or DA as it was called. Going to church on Easter Sunday was a sight to behold! All the women and young girls (me included) wore a hat adorned with artificial flowers along with white gloves.

Toys and Hobbies I wasn't much into dolls as a child because I preferred to be outside exploring or making something with my hands. The one doll that I did enjoy for a short time was the Ginny Doll that is tucked away in a closet complete with all the clothes, accessories and furniture along with a Toni Doll still in the original box almost untouched. The Toni Doll was a Christmas gift and I was evidently at the age that it just didn't interest me much. Easy Bake Oven has been around for 50 plus years as I was given one for Christmas when I was 8 years old and made and ate all the cakes the first night. Needless to say, I got very sick later that night! One of my weekly downtown stops was the local Hobby Shop that sold Paint by Number products. I would sit at a desk in the sunroom and paint for hours. I painted a black tole waste basket and Kleenex box holder that was given to my Mother as a gift. They also sold magic tricks that fascinated me and I would give magic shows at home on the piano bench covered with a black antique crazy quilt. Two other toys I have fond memories of was the Hula Hoop and the Slinky.

Burma Shave The old motels are now a thing of the past having been replaced with travel hotels. More rooms in a smaller space, but not as convenient as the motels where you would park right in front of your room. When our family would take car trips we would see the Burma Shave signs along the road and read them out load as we passed them. DON'T TRY PASSING, ON A SLOPE, UNLESS YOU HAVE, A PERISCOPE, BURMA-SHAVE.

If computers had come along 45 years sooner, I think my life would have been very different. Oh well, better late than never.

Clip-in Hair Extensions - Beautiful Result Or Advertising Hype?

What are clip-in hair extensions and how are they attached?

Clip-in extensions are perfect if you want to turn your hair into beautiful flowing locks instantly. But, of course, on the down side, they have to be removed at the end of the day. So clip-ins are good for a party, a special date or just whenever you want to look different for a few hours. They are much cheaper than salon-made permanent hair extensions. Another advantage is that clip-ins don't damage your own hair in any way.

Quality hair extensions are several strands of hair, each attached individually. Usually 3- or 4-inch wide pieces go on the back of your head in several layers, and a few 1- or 2-inch wide pieces are put on the sides. As the name suggests, each strand is attaché to your own hair with a clip. With a little bit of practice, clipping the extensions in becomes rather easy and takes only a few minutes. Taking them off is even easier.

You can usually find 14”, 16” and 18” clip-in extensions. Anything longer puts too much tension on your own hair.

Who can wear clip-in extensions?

Clip-in extensions are suitable for people whose natural hair is shoulder length or longer. If you have medium length hair, extensions can make it longer. If you have long but very fine hair, or your hair is not in its best condition, clip-in hair extensions are a great way to bring richness and fullness to your hair.

However, clip-in extensions will not work for women with very short hair. Extensions only look natural when they are mixed in with your natural hair, so if your hair is short, people will notice that you are wearing extensions. If you have a short haircut, but are dying for long locks, buy a wig that is similar in color to your natural hair. High quality designers wigs look very natural - nobody will guess that you are wearing a wig unless you tell them. If a wig is not for you, then you can go for salon-made hair extensions that are braided or glued to your own hair. These stay in for several months, but cost significantly more than clip-ins.

Do clip-in extensions look natural?

It depends on the quality of extensions you get. First, you should know that hair extensions can be made from natural human hair or from synthetic fibers. I will be honest: synthetic hair extensions are cheap, but you get exactly what you pay for. They just don't look right. High quality human hair clip-in extensions, on the other hand, look like they grow from your own head.

If you look online, you will find many brands of clip-in extension. It is best to go for a well known maker of hair-pieces and extensions, such as Diva in a Box, PutOnPieces or Raquel Welch. See pictures of clip-in hair extensions (will be a link) from different brands.

Since the extensions are mixed in with your own hair, color matching is very important. And the good news is that human hair clip-in extensions can be colored to match your own hair color exactly. However, I wouldn't recommend doing that at home - it is better to color your extensions at the salon. You can also use hot iron on the human hair extensions to curl them a little.

How much do they cost?

The cost varies greatly, depending on the material. Synthetic hair extensions will cost you less than $100. For a real human hair extensions, you might pay from $200 to $400. However, you can get good discounts through online hair extensions and wigs shops

Clip-in hair extensions can be real fun. They will help you to create a different image instantly, which is very important for a busy modern woman.

6 Easy Tips To Beautiful, Healthy Hair

Nothing looks more beautiful than a head of full, sleek, and shiny hair. All women want their hair to fall like liquid silk, and while the “results” seen in hair-care commercials may be a bit too perfect to be real, there are numerous things you can do to improve the health and beauty of the hair you have. Here we’ll talk about six things you can do to keep your hair looking and feeling its best.

1. Wet hair is far weaker than dry hair, so make sure that when you’re trying to detangle it, never use a hairbrush or treat it too roughly. Being overly rough with wet hair can lead to a lot of breakage, so use a good leave in conditioner and comb it out with a wide-tooth comb. This will help to drastically minimize damage done to your hair while it is wet.

2. Everyone knows that using a blow dryer on your hair is a great way to damage it. Unfortunately though, the ease and convenience it brings not only time-wise, but for styling makes it a necessity to have. To minimize the damage it does though, use the “cool” setting, and make sure not to dry your hair completely. Leave a little bit of moisture in your lovely locks.

3. Everyone knows that a head full of shiny hair is just gorgeous. Unfortunately, the simple build up of hair care products and normal, day-to-day living can dull your hair out and take away that glamour. To combat this, use an apple cider vinegar rinse on your hair about once a week. Simply mix roughly one or two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with about four cups of water, and then pour it over your hair. This is a great way pull away all that residue that’s been dulling your hair, letting your natural color and shine come out. It gets rid of grime, and is completely natural. It doesn’t smell that great when you put it on your hair in the shower, but after you’ve dried your hair, the smell will be gone and nothing but pure shine will remain.

4. Contrary to what a lot of products say, there is no way to seal or fix split ends. If you notice any split ends on your hair, go in and get them trimmed off. Keeping split ends can result in the split gradually moving up the hair shaft, making your hair look and feel very damaged. Even if you’re growing your hair out, it’s a good idea to go in and get your ends trimmed every so often to keep it looking its best.

5. Make sure to put a deep moisturizing treatment upon your hair once a week. You can find these at any drug store, but homemade ones are natural and fun. They’re almost always made with things you’d find around your kitchen, making them easy to put together as well. Do a quick search to find any number of recipes online, so you can find one that fits your hair type as well.

6. Another important concept that can make a big difference in the appearance eof your hair is that it’s just as important to take care of it from the inside. The healthier you are, the healthier and more naturally beautiful your hair will be, and there are a few vitamins that can be added to your diet to boost the health and appearance of your hair. Vitamin B6 can actually prevent hair loss, and it also produces melanin, which will help keep your hair color more naturally rich and vibrant. Vitamin A and Vitamin C have strong antioxidants that will go a long way to improve the overall health of your hair, and Vitamin E can help promote circulation of the blood through your scalp, giving your hair a more plentiful source of nutrients.

When it comes to beautiful hair, nothing is more important than making sure it is strong and healthy. No matter what your hair color or type is, if you limit the amount of damage you inflict upon it and promote natural health, you’ll see a drastic improvement in shine, color, and overall brilliance.
